FIRMWARE UPDATE

We constantly seek out new ways to make your MINOTAIR better!
It really does not matter if you bought your MINOTAIR one, three or five years ago. Thanks to its USB-programmable port, you can rest assured knowing that you will be able to take advantage of new features and enhancements. All our updates are backward compatible with all MINOTAIR models.  Your MINOTAIR will keep evolving and benefiting you for many years. Besides, it’s complimentary, so why not take advantage of it!

Current Version: 6.3.2 (2017-04-04)

It has been over a year and a half since the last firmware update, and version 6.3.2 is the most important to date. Version 6.3.2 implements the following new features and improvements (download it now):

BIOS 6.42
The BIOS is to the controller of the Minotair what the cerebellum is to our brain. It regulates all the motor functions as well as the temperature and humidity sensors. This version improves the general operation of the basic functions of the Minotair.
Virtual Bathroom Timer 1.0
It is now possible to trigger a virtual bathroom timer directly from the Minotair wall mount control panel.  Great for sporadic fresh air boosts such as when cooking.  One activates the virtual bathroom timer by first holding down the key, followed by the number of key presses of the Program_Key key corresponding to 10, 20 or 30-minute intervals.  A fourth key press will turn the virtual bathroom timer off.  Note that Physical Bathroom Timers always take precedence over the Virtual timer.
Automatic Temperature Mode 3.0
The automatic transitions from heating to cooling and vice versa in automatic mode have been greatly improved.  The shoulder seasons and hot summer days with cool nights are now perfectly supported.  Moreover, should your fireplace end up overheating your home during the coldest months of winter, you can rest assure the system will not switch to cooling but will instead keep that extra heat in reserve for later.
Shower Detector 2.0

  • Enhanced principle of operation. Shower detection is a lot more precise than before and allows to extract more moisture more rapidly.  In dryness conditions, when a moisture surge is detected, the system will enforce Recirculation mode to redistribute the moisture generated from showers.  If no dryness condition was detected at the time of detection, moisture will be exhausted outside the building.  At any time, if a Bathroom Timer is activated, it will override the shower detector and will exhaust moisture and odours outside.
  • When the Bathroom Timers setting is set to HIGH speed in the Ventilation menu, the shower detector will now run at the highest speed allowed by the duct size setting (180 or 250 cfm) to increase the capacity of extracting moisture from the bathroom.
  • Shower detector sensitivity can now be adjusted to HIGH or NORMAL in Humidity menu. Only use HIGH in case showers are not always detected.

7-Day Program 2.0:

  • Now relies on Heat losses and Heat gains to satisfy changes in the setpoint. For instance, if in Heating mode and the setpoint goes from 22°C to 20°C, the system will remain in heating mode and rely on heat losses to reduce temperature over time. Likewise, in Cooling mode, if the setpoint goes from 20°C to 22°C system will remain in cooling mode and will rely on heat gains to increase temperature over time.
  • 7-Day Program will now make use of the manual heating and cooling setpoints when it encounters an empty time slot (i.e. one that is not set for daytime, night time, or away). Recall that the manual setpoints are entered via the Temperature menu, while the Day, Night and Away setpoints are entered in the Program menu.
SMART Mode 3.0:

  • Dozens of under-the-hood improvements ensure smarter overall operations than before.
  • Overall better moisture management with improved HUMIWATCH 365 system coupled with tighter humidity setpoint tolerances.
  • In dryness conditions, if the system detects outside air contains more moisture than inside air, then it will humidify using fresh air from outside.
  • Now possible to disable Air Exchange mode if severe dryness conditions are present. This applies mainly to winter operations and to houses that are not airtight. The principle is based on the stack effect that the colder the outside air gets, the more pressure it will put on the walls and thus the more air will infiltrate inside the house, requiring less mechanical ventilation.   Note that in this case, the minimum 10 minutes of fresh air guaranteed by the Smart mode will be overridden.
Auxiliary Heating and Cooling 3.0 :

  • Improved integration with central heating and cooling appliances. If Minotair is only a few more minutes away from reaching desired setpoint, it will refrain from calling the auxiliary appliance(s) for help, thus increasing energy efficiency.
  • New safety feature.  Now possible to use a remote sensor to read indoor temperature when Minotair controls Central Air Handler or Furnace.  This allows indoor temperature to be controlled normally in the unlikely case of a severe Minotair malfunction.
MODBUS 1.0
Now possible for a building automation system to read MINOTAIR system variables via the MODBUS protocol over the controller RS-485 serial interface. In a later version, it will also be possible to control the Minotair by this same automation system.
(For advanced users only.  More info available upon request).
Self-Diagnosis Module 2.0:

  • The module handles the “change filter” and “change HEPA” warnings better in case both are due to be changed at the same time.
  • The module is now able to detect certain system abnormalities and apply corrective measures to prevent them from becoming problems.
Several other tweaking and improvements.

How do I tell which firmware version my MINOTAIR is using?
Simply press the program key “Program_Key” on your digital control and navigate to the System Info submenu. Then navigate down to the screen called Software Version. The current version used by your MINOTAIR is the one at the top of the list (Version 3.4 in this example).

Do I have to update to the latest version?
No you don’t. If you are happy with your MINOTAIR the way it is, then you absolutely can leave it as is. However, if you see something in the list of features and updates that triggers your interest or that you think might enrich your MINOTAIR experience, then by all means feel free to install the latest release. The update process is easy and 100% safe.

Update in 3 easy steps!

USB Key Prerequisites:
  • Your USB key must be of a capacity not exceeding 32 GB. A 1 GB USB key is really all you need if you can find one that small nowadays!
  • The USB key must not be named MINOTAIR as this will cause a conflict and the update process will not work.
  • The USB key must be in a FAT or FAT32 file system format (that’s normally not an issue). To make sure of this, simply right-click on your USB key and select “properties”. You should see FAT or FAT32 next to the File System label. If you see NTFS, then you will need to reformat your USB key with the FAT32 file system. To do so, right-click on your USB key and select “Format”. Then simply select FAT32 and use the quick format option to save time (and, make sure not to name your USB key MINOTAIR!).
  • It is recommended to use a blank key, which you might want to dedicate to your MINOTAIR for convenience and to eliminate all risks of incompatibility with files other than the ones required for the update.
  • MAC USERS. Mac computers write hidden files on USB keys, which will make the update process fail. To solve this problem, you must install a small software application that will remove these invisible files when ejecting the USB key from your Mac. Examples of such application are EjectForWindows and HiddenCleaner (in French only), and both are free.
MINOTAIR disclaims all liability concerning the use of these software applications on your computer.
Step 1 - Copy the firmware to your USB key:
  • Click here to download the latest firmware release. It is in a zip format.
  • Save the zip file to your computer.
  • Open the zip file by double-clicking on it. It should contain one folder and one file as per the following:
    • MINOTAIR
    • autorun.txt
  • Insert your USB key into your computer.
  • Select both the folder and the file in the opened zip file and extract them to the root directory of your USB key. The root directory is the top-most folder in your USB key. In other words, do not extract the two elements into a subfolder or else the update process will not work.
  • Your root directory should contain exactly the following folder and files:
GOOD!

  • USB KEY (Root Directory)
    • MINOTAIR (folder)
      • bios642.bin
      • MainLogic.bin
      • MainLogic.grp
      • MainLogic000_PGD1_EN.iup
      • MainLogic001_PGD1_FR.iup
    • autorun.txt
WRONG!

  • USB KEY (Root Directory)
    • SOME OTHER FOLDER
      • MINOTAIR (folder)
        • bios642.bin
        • MainLogic.bin
        • MainLogic.grp
        • MainLogic000_PGD1_EN.iup
        • MainLogic001_PGD1_FR.iup
      • autorun.txt
Step 2 - Prepare the MINOTAIR for update:
  • Open the MINOTAIR main access panel.
  • Press any key on the microcontroller to take it out of sleep and to activate the backlit display.
  • Turn off the ventilation by pressing on the alarm key “Alarm_Key” for 3 seconds (you will hear a series of beeps when doing this).
  • You should take note of the current settings contained in the VENTILATION, TEMPERATURE and HUMIDITY submenus in case you need to re-enter them later.
Step 3 - Update the firmware:
  • Insert the USB key into the upper USB port on the microcontroller.
  • Wait a few seconds until the microcontroller asks you to confirm the application upload operation. Press the enter key to confirm.
  • Wait 1-2- minutes for the microcontroller to complete the update. While this is happening, there will be several screens appearing. Ignore all of them until you finally see the one asking to cut power to the MINOTAIR.
  • Cut power to the MINOTAIR by turning off the circuit breaker feeding the MINOTAIR or by turning off a dedicated switch if exists.
  • Remove the USB key from the microcontroller.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and reapply power to the MINOTAIR. The MINOTAIR will then start its boot sequence which will last 30-45 seconds.
  • Re-enter the settings of the VENTILATION, TEMPERATURE and HUMIDITY submenus as required. You might also need to re-adjust the clock.
  • Restart the ventilation by pressing the up arrow key.
  • Close the MINOTAIR main access panel.
  • That’s it! You now have an updated MINOTAIR.
